Your Questions — Answered Honestly

The things you've been wondering
but haven't said out loud yet.

"Is blood in my urine serious?"

Any visible blood in the urine — even once, even if it resolves — warrants a same-week evaluation. In most cases the cause is benign: a small kidney stone, a urinary tract infection, or minor irritation. But because the bladder and kidneys can't be assessed by symptoms alone, we'll run a quick urinalysis and, if needed, an ultrasound during your first visit. Most patients leave with an answer the same day.

"I wake up two or three times a night to urinate. Is that normal at my age?"

It's common — but it's not something you have to accept. Nocturia (nighttime urination) has several treatable causes: an overactive bladder, benign prostate enlargement in men, or fluid redistribution issues. A brief symptom questionnaire and a non-invasive bladder scan during your visit can usually identify the pattern within one appointment. Many patients see meaningful improvement within four to six weeks of starting treatment.

"I noticed my stream is weaker than it used to be. Should I worry?"

A weakening urinary stream in men over 45 is one of the most common reasons patients come to see us — and one of the most treatable. The most frequent cause is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. We'll perform a simple prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a brief physical exam to rule out anything more serious and discuss medication or minimally invasive options that fit your lifestyle.

About Your Visit

What actually happens
when you walk through the door.

"Will the exam hurt?"

Most urology evaluations are straightforward and cause minimal discomfort. A digital rectal exam (DRE) for prostate assessment takes under 30 seconds and feels like brief pressure — nothing sharp. Cystoscopy, when needed, is performed with a topical anesthetic gel and a very slim flexible scope; most patients describe it as mild pressure for about two minutes. We'll always explain each step before we do it, and we move at your pace.

"I'm a woman — is a urologist the right doctor for my bladder issues?"

Absolutely. Roughly half of our patients are women. Stress urinary incontinence (leaking when you sneeze, laugh, or exercise) and overactive bladder are among the most common conditions we treat. Female urology is a core part of our practice — not a specialty afterthought. Many women have spent years managing symptoms with pads or avoiding situations that trigger leakage. There are effective, minimally invasive treatments that can genuinely change daily life.

"My doctor mentioned a varicocele and we're trying to conceive. What does that mean for us?"

A varicocele is a dilation of the veins draining the testicle — similar to a varicose vein — and it's the most surgically correctable cause of male infertility. We'll review your semen analysis, assess the varicocele grade with a brief scrotal ultrasound, and have an honest conversation about whether repair is likely to improve your numbers. Many couples see meaningful improvement in sperm parameters within three to six months of treatment.

What Comes Next

Results, next steps,
and no surprises.

"How long before I get results?"

For most common tests — urinalysis, PSA blood draw, bladder scan — results are available during or immediately after your appointment. We don't send you home wondering. Pathology from a biopsy takes five to seven business days, and we call every patient personally with those results. You will never receive a life-changing diagnosis by letter or patient portal message alone.

"I found a kidney stone on a scan. Do I need surgery?"

Roughly 80% of kidney stones smaller than 5mm pass on their own with adequate hydration and pain management. For stones that are larger, causing obstruction, or not progressing, we offer several minimally invasive options: shock wave lithotripsy (no incision, outpatient), ureteroscopy with laser fragmentation (same-day procedure), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for complex cases. We'll review your scan together and give you a clear recommendation — not a menu of options without guidance.

"Will my insurance cover this?"

We are in-network with most major insurance plans, including Medicare and many Medicaid programs. Urology visits are typically covered under specialist copay terms. Our front desk will verify your specific benefits before your appointment so there are no billing surprises. Patients without insurance can ask about our transparent self-pay pricing — we'll quote you a flat fee before any procedure.
